Common Reasons for an Assessment:

People seek out assessment services for a variety of reasons. You may be struggling with some aspect of your life and would like to understand why and what you can do about it. A loved one or friend may have suggested you seek services to find answers to your struggles. A teacher, family doctor or specialist may have recommended that you or your child get tested for a suspected learning disability.

At Turning Corners Psychological Services we offer a variety of assessment options to help our clients come to better understand and better describe their lives or the lives of their children. The goals of an assessment are to identify strengths and areas of need to help our clients live happier lives and offer recommendations that will foster growth, self-acceptance and self-improvement.

How do I arrange for an assessment?

Clients can self-refer by contacting the practice. There is no need for a physician referral to our practice although obtaining a referral may be needed by clients with extended health coverage.

What is involved in an assessment?

An assessment can be an intimidating process, so much so that people sometimes delay seeking services because of concerns about being “evaluated” or “judged.” At Turning Corners Psychological Services our providers will treat you with respect, warmth, compassion and professionalism.

Based on the reason for the assessment, the clinician’s judgment and your comfort level, an assessment can involve gathering information from multiple sources and in various different ways. Some examples of this can include:

Clinical interviewsBehavioural observationsReview of past reportsSchool records reviewAdministration of specific test batteriesSurveysPsychometric measuresProjective measuresPersonality inventories

All information gathered is used integratively to conceptualize cases, formulate diagnoses when necessary and develop recommendations, treatment plans and feedback.
